Nicky Gumbel is the pioneer of Alpha. He studied law and practiced as a barrister for 6 years, before going to Oxford to study theology. He was ordained as a priest and in 2005 he became the Vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton, one of the largest Church of England churches in the UK.
